Hero of the Seas and The SpongeBob Musical: what to know before the 2027 launch

On October 2, 2026, Royal Caribbean announced that The SpongeBob Musical will be the headline show on Hero of the Seas. It is the first time the show has played at sea. Hero was floated out at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland in early September 2026. Royal Caribbean lists its maiden voyage as August 1, 2027, from Miami.

Royal Caribbean has not yet published the show's performance schedule, cast, or seating rules. I note those gaps below so you know what to ask.

The show

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the Nickelodeon series created by Stephen Hillenburg and the Broadway production that followed. The story follows SpongeBob and his friends as Bikini Bottom faces volcanic destruction. Kyle Jarrow wrote the book, and Tina Landau conceived the production. The score draws on songs by artists including Yolanda Adams, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, The Flaming Lips, and David Bowie. Jonathan Coulton wrote additional lyrics, and Tom Kitt added music.

On Hero, the production is adapted for Royal Caribbean's theater and stage technology. It plays in the Royal Theater, a three-deck-high show lounge at the front of the ship on decks 3 to 5.

Royal Caribbean has not said how often the show runs, how long it is, who is cast, or whether seats need to be reserved.

What stands out about the ship

Hero is an Icon Class ship built at Meyer Turku in Finland. Royal Caribbean's fast facts, updated October 6, 2026, give these figures:

• 248,663 gross tons, 1,196 feet (364 meters) long and 219 feet (66 meters) wide
• 20 decks, 18 of them for guests
• 2,814 staterooms and 5,654 guests at double occupancy
• 2,350 international crew

Royal Caribbean's announcement and fast facts list these features:

• Eight neighborhoods and nine pools, which the line calls the most pools at sea
• Coconut Cove, a new Caribbean-style pool area
• Hideaway, the adults-only area, with two pools and what Royal Caribbean calls the largest swim-up bar at sea
• Two new family raft slides at Category 6, one of them billed as the first funnel raft slide at sea
• The new Ultimate Family Treehouse, and new family cooking classes
• 28 dining venues, including the new Orleans Parish Supper Club and Royal Railway: Hero Station, where diners sit in train cars
• Complimentary venues such as the Windjammer, Dining Room, Coastal Kitchen and AquaDome Market, and specialty venues such as Chops Grille, Giovanni's Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar, Izumi, Hooked Seafood and Chef's Table
• The Royal Theater and AquaTheater for shows, plus Absolute Zero, which the line describes as the largest ice arena at sea
• Mini golf, laser tag, a rock climbing wall, FlowRider, a Royal Escape Room, and VOOM internet powered by Starlink

Where and when it sails

Hero is homeported in Miami. Royal Caribbean's fast facts list the maiden voyage as August 1, 2027, and its booking search already shows sailings in August 2027. The three sample itineraries below are roundtrip from Miami, and each stops at Perfect Day CocoCay in The Bahamas. Each search result listed two dates, and I have named the date shown for each.

Royal Caribbean describes the regular schedule as seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings.

Planning notes for fans and groups
